Preservation in Practice
Long-term preservation is mostly unglamorous, repetitive work, and it fails quietly when it is not done.
NorCal Seeds & Genetics is a private cannabis genetic resource organization built through decades of breeding, cultivation, selection and preservation.
What began with physical genetics has developed into a broader resource connecting genetic diversity with provenance, breeding intelligence, firsthand knowledge, scientific characterization and structured data.

01Our Story
Meaningful genetic resources take time to build.
NSG’s repository reflects decades of firsthand work with cannabis genetics, including breeding, cultivation, phenotypic selection, collection and preservation. Across that history, its founders accumulated not only physical genetic material, but also knowledge about where genetics originated, how lines developed, why selections were made and how plants expressed themselves across generations and growing environments.
That history matters because genetic material does not tell its entire story on its own. Provenance, lineage, breeding decisions, observations and firsthand experience provide context that cannot simply be recreated through sequencing or scientific analysis. NSG is working to preserve both.

02From Preservation to Understanding
Preservation remains fundamental to NSG’s work, but preservation is only part of the story. Today, NSG is systematically documenting selected resources within its repository at the accession level and connecting physical genetics and accumulated breeding knowledge with modern genomic, chemical, metabolomic and phenotypic information.
Together, those layers create a more complete genetic resource — one in which physical material, history, knowledge, scientific evidence and structured information reinforce one another.
The objective is to preserve meaningful cannabis genetic diversity while continually deepening what is known about these resources and their potential utility.

03Why Genetic Diversity Matters
Cannabis genetics reflect generations of cultivation, adaptation, breeding and selection. When genetic diversity disappears, biological resources and the history associated with them can disappear as well.
Preserving diverse genetic resources maintains possibilities that may become increasingly important as plant science, breeding, agriculture, biotechnology and cannabis research evolve.
By preserving genetics while documenting and studying them, NSG is helping ensure that both the physical resources and the knowledge surrounding them remain available for future understanding and discovery.

Physical genetics are the foundation. Their long-term utility increases when they can be understood in context.

NSG is progressively connecting genetics with:
Provenance, lineage and breeding history
Firsthand observations and institutional knowledge
Accession-level documentation
Scientific characterization and validation
Genomic, chemical, metabolomic and phenotypic information
Genetic diversity, relationships and distinctiveness
Structured data
Together, those layers create a more complete genetic resource — one in which physical material, history, knowledge, scientific evidence and structured information reinforce one another.
04Our Philosophy
For NSG, stewardship means more than maintaining seeds. It means protecting genetic diversity, preserving the history and knowledge connected to those genetics and using modern science to deepen understanding of the resources generations of breeders and cultivators worked to create.
