From Preservation to Deeper Understanding

NorCal Seeds & Genetics is advancing the scientific characterization and validation of selected genetic resources through genomic analysis, chemical and metabolomic characterization, phenotypic observation and other research approaches.

This work connects decades of physical genetics and breeding intelligence with modern scientific evidence, helping deepen understanding of genetic identity, diversity, relationships, characteristics and distinctiveness.

01Scientific Characterization

Building Evidence Around Genetic Resources

Scientific characterization adds new layers of understanding to preserved genetics. NSG’s research and validation program is designed to build a more robust body of evidence around selected genetic accessions by connecting scientific information with provenance, lineage, breeding history and firsthand observations.

As this work progresses, NSG is creating a more structured and scientifically supported understanding of the resources within its repository.

02Genomic Characterization

Understanding Identity, Relationships & Diversity

Genomic analysis provides another lens for examining cannabis genetics. NSG uses genomic characterization to deepen understanding of selected genetic resources, including:

Identity

Relationships

Diversity

Genetic distinctiveness

When combined with breeding history, provenance and other forms of characterization, genomic information contributes to a more complete picture of individual accessions and the broader genetic resource.

03Chemical & Metabolomic Characterization

Adding New Layers of Evidence

Chemical and metabolomic characterization can provide additional information about the characteristics expressed by selected genetics.

NSG is integrating these forms of analysis with other scientific and historical information to build a multidimensional understanding of selected genetic resources.

04Phenotypic Observation

Connecting Genetics With Plant Expression

Decades of breeding and cultivation have produced extensive firsthand observations about how cannabis genetics express themselves. Phenotypic observation helps connect real-world plant characteristics with other layers of information, including breeding history, genomic analysis and chemical characterization.

Together, these perspectives can deepen understanding of how genetics relate to observable traits and performance.

05Genetic Diversity & Distinctiveness

Understanding Relationships & Differences

One of NSG’s central scientific priorities is building a deeper understanding of the diversity represented within its genetic resource.

Scientific characterization can help evaluate relationships and differences among selected accessions and contribute evidence around genetic identity and distinctiveness.

This work strengthens NSG’s ability to document the resource based not simply on the quantity of genetics preserved, but on the diversity and differentiation represented within it.

06Research & Future Utility

Creating New Possibilities Through Understanding

As NSG’s genetic resources become more thoroughly documented and scientifically characterized, their potential utility expands. Deeper understanding of genetic identity, relationships, traits and distinctiveness can support future research, trait discovery, breeding innovation and genetic improvement.

Research underway

Work in progress on selected accessions, reported as it is cleared for public release.

Capabilities in development

Genetic-marker identification, marker-assisted breeding and selection, and future intellectual-property development.

Demonstrated findings

Results that have been scientifically demonstrated. NSG distinguishes these from the two above, deliberately and in every statement it makes.
